A foretaste of Christadelphian fundamentalism in 1948

Editor's Note by John Bedson: The writer of this article is NOT an Ex-Christadelphian, he is a Christadelphian medical doctor in Australia. He does NOT agree with the Atheist position of this website. Nevertheless his progressive thinking regarding his faith and the failings of the Christadelphian religion in general make a valuable contribution to the debate about where the Christadelphian religion is heading and how it may be reformed. I am pleased to be able to recommend his work to my readers. Not counting our Ex-Christadelphian authors I consider Ken Gilmore to be the finest Christadelphian writer alive or dead. I consider the recently disfellowshipped Jonathan Burke to run a close second for this accolade.

By Ken Gilmore

Today, I ran across a 1948 article in The Christadelphian lamenting "the influence of weekday school instruction upon children’s attitude to the Bible", which specifically named higher criticism and evolution as "the two most potent influences in undermining faith of today." The anonymous author's assertion that "both are being discarded increasingly by thinkers today" struck me as being more a case of wishful thinking than an accurate summary of the state of scholarly play at the time.

The evidence for Evolution

By Steve Pryde

In this article I want to list some of the reasons why so many people, including the vast majority of scientists, believe in evolution.

Even if you are a creationist, it's important to understand not only
what other people believe, but also why they find it compelling. If you cannot fathom how any sane, rational person could believe in evolution, then maybe what you call 'evolution' is not actually what people believe. Maybe they believe something else, instead.

So let's take a look at some lines of evidence...

Yahweh - A God of war

The God of the Bible is a
grotesque human fantasy
By 'Fed up with religion'

"The Lord is a man of war; Yahweh is his name." – Exodus 15.3.

"I form the light, and create darkness. I make peace, and create EVIL. I the LORD do all these things." – Isaiah 45.7.

All cultures have anthropomorphized their gods into humanoid (if sometimes grotesque) form. Were the Jews the exception? Hardly. We know precisely what the Hebrew god looked like. We are, after all, fashioned in his own likeness! "Yahweh", in fact, is an abbreviation of the longer name, "Yahweh Sabaoth." Sabaoth is the Greek form of the Hebrew word tsebaoth "armies”. Thus Yahweh's name identifies the god primarily as the military leader of the tribe. In the mouth and the mind of an ancient Hebrew, Yahweh-tsebaoth was the leader and commander of the armies of the nation. - Prof. Corrine L. Carvalho. Encountering Ancient Voices: A Guide to Reading the Old Testament.
In other passages in the Bible, a longer version of the name, the Lord of hosts, could also be translated as “the one who created the heavenly armies.” This would suggest that Yahweh was first and foremost a warrior God.

Evolutionary Creationism and the Christadelphians

"It's a minority sect within a minority sect"

By Steve Pryde

Christadelphian Evolutionary Creationists ignore the fact that
the Bible teaches Special Creation of living species and that the
writers of the Bible were ignorant of the true origins of the
Universe, matter, energy, galaxies, stars, planets and life.
Evolutionary Creationism (also known as Theistic Evolution) is the idea that the Bible and science need not be in conflict with regard to our origins. It attempts to reconcile the vast and compelling evidence for evolution with views about God and creation, and often those found in the Bible specifically.

I came to understand Theistic Evolution around the same time that I was grappling with various other questions about the Bible, from both a scientific and textual perspective. Understanding how to reconcile Genesis with science allowed me to review the scientific evidence anew without the fear that it would destroy my faith. For a while I accepted it, and it all made sense. Well, almost all of it. But I was sure that any remaining issues with the theory could be resolved in due course.

Who tidied my leaves?

My pet dog Jezzell thinking about Evolution
By John Bedson

Who helped me to tidy my backyard by collecting these dead leaves and putting them in the corner? Was it me? - No. Was it God? - There is no evidence of that. Was it blind chance? - No.

A message to Christadelphians about the KINGDOM

By Fed Up With Religion

You all need to re-read the character Jesus’ words putting yourselves in the place of the Scribes and Pharisees. You are the modern day version after all.

He may just be talking about you and to you... Let’s look at just a few of Jesus’ words and some observations.

It's bad news Brother Jonathan Bowen. Your
'blood-bath following the return of Christ' talk

didn't win you this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

STOP and consider this for a moment.

If the Bible and Christianity were introduced as a NEW religion today, how would it be received?

The end of religion

By 'Fed up with religion'

If we as a species are to move forward, it is extremely important that this mass delusion called religion, in whatever form that may take, be addressed. Evolution in consciousness is frozen at the time the Romans worked out religion would be a perfect way to control the population. This website is helping with that progress, so kudos to all involved for that.

Recent measurements of an element in Earth and Moon rocks have disproved the current leading hypotheses for the origin of the Moon, shown what actually happened at the time of the formation of the Earth and its Moon and further disparaged the mythical and erroneous Biblical account of creation.

Hate Preacher Jonathan Bowen Shocks Swanwick Family Bible School!

Jonathan Bowen
By Joseph Strong

During a presentation at the Christadelphian 2016 Swanwick Family Bible School, Hate Preacher Jonathan Bowen launched a vitriolic attack against Central Fellowship brethren and sisters who believe in Theistic Evolution (Evolutionary Creationism) accusing them of "destroying some of our Ecclesias and young people, bringing people off to their deaths." He threatened retribution against these brethren by resurrected Christadelphians. He threatened widespread genocide against non-believers committed by immortalised Christadelphians and a "bloodbath" at the start of the Kingdom Age. Jonathan Burke being questioned
by the Christadelphians
about his views on Evolution
By John Bedson

Jonathan Burke has been disfellowshipped by the Christadelphians because of his belief in Evolution. This news is contained in the Ecclesial News section of the March 2016 issue of The Christadelphian magazine.

From a fourteen year old Christadelphian young person who deconverted

Paul Davis

Editors' Note: This is an article from our archives dating back to 2013. To protect Paul from trouble from the Christadelphians we have disguised all details about him including his picture. This amazing young person was only fourteen when he wrote this! He is an example of courage, intelligence and critical thinking skills to other Christadelphian young people. Our thanks to Christadelphian Jonathan Bowen for featuring this article in a talk at Swanwick Family Bible School.

"Doveryai, no proveryai" - (Trust but verify) - A Russian proverb

Trust but verify
By John Bedson

There is a Russian proverb “Doveryai, no proveryai.” (Trust but also verify). Regan used it to Gorbachev when Gorbachev asked Regan why he did not trust him on disarmament. That's all that we Ex-CDs are asking of the Christadelphians. We observe your faith and we trust you that it has foundation. But we need to verify your religion. We need to see some validation for your beliefs. But all we see is evidence that only has merit with people who have been brought up as children to believe that evidence.

An email message from Tim Harrington and the Australian Boronia Christadelphians received today

"You Neanderthal degenerate mutant turds never give up do you. You are the dogs that retufn (sic) to your isn (sic) vomit. You are the pigs that love wallowing in your own excretement. (sic) You are all a waste of mental space. The FOOL has said in his heart there is no God. Your god is your belly. - Bye bye morons"

Editor's note: Thanks for your message Tim and thanks to all of the delightful brethren and sisters at the Boronia Christadelphian ecclesia whom you represent at: http://www.ukchristadelphians.org.uk/info.asp?act=ecc&id=414 It's good to see that the spirit of intelligent, robust Christadelphian debate is alive and well at your ecclesia. As you have shown a interest in the thinking of Ex-Christadelphians, a group of us will favour you with a visit to one of your Wednesday evening "Seminars and Workshops"  ( http://www.bible4life.org.au/index.php/bible-education/seminars-and-workshops ) and explain to you why we prefer to "return to our own vomit" and "wallow in our own excrement" rather than share the fellowship of Christadelphians.

The Miracle of the Sun

External article from 'pansapien'

"I've been thinking a bit more about miracles recently and wondering what would persuade someone to change their mind on the question of miracles happening (either from a believer to a skeptic or the other way around).

I was interested to discover a possible miracle that happened just under 100 years ago with apparently good evidence in support of it. The miracle is known as ‘The miracle of the Sun’, and happened in Portugal in 1917. The reason it particularly interested me is because I think it contains a number of the elements that people use in support of Jesus resurrection."

The Bible may be older than previously thought

Academia has long debated how much of the Tanakh (Torah, Prophets and Writings) was written before the destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE and the Babylonian exile, with exact dates of the compilation remaining a serious question for academic scholars. However, a new Tel Aviv University (TAU) study published in PNAS suggests that widespread literacy was required for the compilation of the texts, and provides evidence showing that this literacy already existed in the final days of the Kingdom of Judah before the destruction. The researchers claim that this large number of literate Jews set the stage for the compilation of biblical works, such as the books of the Tanakh from Deuteronomy to Second Kings. Help a Christadelphian

Christadelphians who lose their
faith often suffer confusion and
 substantial emotional pain
By John Bedson

A previous article has highlighted the fact that we need to turn our social media support of Christadelphians and Ex-Christadelphians into something more concrete. Considerable numbers of Christadelphians are re-evaluating, or losing their faith, while others have deconverted or been excommunicated. They need real-time, personal support, not just Internet based encouragement.

Gog and Magog in surprise retreat from the Middle East - Christadelphian prophets fail again

In a surprise move, Russian President Vladimir Putin has today ordered his military to start withdrawing the "main part" of its forces in Syria. They will no longer "threaten" Israel. - Not that they ever did; they worked in close co-ordination with Israel and even let Israel attack their close allies the Hezbollah. Christadelphians who told us that Russia in the Middle East was a sign of the end and the return of Christ have been shown to be wrong yet again.

Ex-Christadelphian help needed in Southern California please

Do you live in
Southern California?
Can you help.
We urgently need an Ex-Christadelphian in Southern California to provide support for another Ex-Christadelphian who needs a visit. This person already belongs to our Facebook support group, but something more is required to help him or her get back on their feet again after losing their Christadelphian faith. They need to talk over their problems with a real person in confidence, not on Social Media. Can you help?

I hope you enjoy it :-)

The death of Almon McCann

Almon (Corky) McCann
1947 - 2016

It is with much sorrow that we report the recent death of Almon (Corky) McCann on 5th February 2016 following a long battle with cancer. He was 68 years of age. Almon was the founder of this website in 2008 and also the founder of the Facebook Ex-Christadelphians group, which now numbers approximately two hundred members.

THE TRUTH? - Belief masquerading as knowledge

Steve Pryde
By Steve Pryde

Is there a god? Is there life after death? People have been asking these sorts of questions for thousands of years. Some Christadelphians claim to have the answers. But do they actually know the answer? or is their claim to knowledge actually just belief masquerading as knowledge? Click here to read the rest of this article
